Three Truths

& A Doorway

Meeting life on life’s terms

A four-week online retreat with Moudi Sbeity
January 8–29, 2027

Begins January 8

Hosted by Moudi Sbeity

Author of ‘Habibi Means Beloved’, a memoir, and ‘Alhamdulillah Anyway’, a poetry collection

Join Moudi Sbeity for a 4-week online retreat exploring how we can come to terms with three truths that everyone encounters: the fact of impermanence, no future free of trouble, and no arrival at a fixed self.

Together, we’ll explore these truths of the human condition and how we might meet them with greater honesty and authenticity.

Chances are, you’ve faced and experienced all three. Chances are, you will again. So, how do we cultivate effective tools and perspectives to help us face these givens?

Through poetry, contemplative practices, reflective writing, group discussion and opportunities to share from the heart, we'll explore how we relate to these truths—and the doorway they offer into a deeper relationship with ourselves, one another, and life as it unfolds.

During our time together, you'll…

⊹ Deepen your relationship to the truths of impermanence, the promise of obstacles, and ever-changing nature of self

⊹ Explore how acceptance can open new possibilities for meeting life’s challenges

⊹ Engage with poetry that speaks to the human condition

⊹ Write in community and share

⊹ Connect with others on a shared journey of cultivating authenticity and presence

⊹ Learn practices and perspectives you can carry into everyday life

Moudi on the Three Truths

"Moudi Sbeity's poems and teachings both will fill your heart and make it sing. Moudi's very presence reminds us of the sacred nature of daily life, showing us how to stay open to it all."

-James Crews, Author and Poet

There are three truths everyone encounters and must come to terms with:

01
Impermanence
________________

Everyone we know and love, including ourselves, will one day die. Loss is not a maybe, it’s a guarantee.

02
No future free of trouble
________________

To live is to suffer, as the Buddha famously said. No matter how far in our practice we get, still we will be met by obstacles and challenges.

03
No arrival at a fixed authentic self
________________

Instead, we arrive at each moment with the opportunity to meet it honestly and authentically.

These are the conditions I bring up with everyone I work with as a counselor, conditions necessary to contemplate if truly we are to know contentment and peace in our lives.

And now, the doorway.

We can either open or close. We can step through the door of experience, or remain shut to it. We can accept or resist.

Resistance in this context spells suffering. Acceptance is the cultivation of wisdom.

What does acceptance look like? In what situations is resistance the necessary position?

Together, we'll explore these questions, cultivating the wisdom and discernment to meet life as it is, without requiring any particular outcome.

We will gather online for two hours each week, exploring the week’s theme through:

Contemplative teachings and reflections

Poetry and reflective writing

Sharing in small groups

Community discussion

Opportunity for live one-on-one sharing and reflection from Moudi

Practices and exercises to explore between gatherings

This retreat is ideal for someone who:

✧ Is contemplative and loves discussing life’s existential topics

✧ Loves poetry and writing (no writing experience necessary)

✧ Feels grounded in their spiritual practice and is seeking community

✧ Is navigating change, loss, uncertainty or a period of personal reflections

✧ Is looking to deepen their relationship to themselves

The Journey

Impermanence and Death

Loss is promised, and so is constant change. How do we come to terms with grief as a requirement of love? What does it mean to become students of letting go?

In Praise of Obstacles

To live is to continually adjust to change, and so to continually meet challenges and obstacles. Now that we have accepted this, how do we find the courage and strength not just to keep moving forward, but learn from our experience?

No Fixed Self, No Arrival

Who we are is a question of relationships. If the world around us is always changing, then so are we. Instead of arriving at a fixed version of ourselves, we could meet each moment with honesty and authenticity. Let’s explore who we can be beyond the striving for perfection.

A Doorway: Acceptance and Faith

We cannot change the givens of life. Acceptance here doesn't mean resignation, but surrender with commitment to our path. We’ll explore ways to honor these terms, and deeper still, accept that we won’t always get this right. But we can cultivate faith in our ability to show up regardless.

Participants are highly encouraged to commit to all four sessions as each builds on to the next, deepening our understanding of ourselves and our condition.
Recordings will be available for each session within 24-48 hours.
